Wusthof Gourmet 7-Piece Knife Set with Block

Amazon.com Review

This handsome set contains just about every kitchen knife you'll ever need. It includes an 8-inch cook's knife, a 3-1/2-inch parer, an 8-inch serrated bread knife, and a 4-1/2-inch utility knife, which is an efficient slicer for a wide range of cutting tasks. In addition, the set comes with shears, a 9-inch steel for sharpening, and a nine-slot solid oak block for storage. A rewarding investment in cutting ease and efficiency, this collection would also make a perfect gift.

Part of the Classic series, the implements in this set represent two centuries of unexcelled Wüsthof craftsmanship. The knives are hand-forged from a single piece of stainless steel for maximum strength, and their hand-polished blades are exactingly calibrated to be hard enough to resist dulling yet soft enough to take keen edges when honed or sharpened. Dishwasher-safe, the knives are also fitted with traditionally shaped, ergonomically designed handles that are triple-riveted for durability. All Wüsthof cutlery brings a guaranteed lifetime of low-maintenance cutting to its owners. --Arthur Boehm

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Knives, Are They The Right Knives For You?, November 19, 2001
By
D "sub" (Metro Detroit, MI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wusthof Gourmet 7-Piece Knife Set with Block (Kitchen)
There are really two main competitors in the high-end mainstream kitchen knife market: Henckels and Wusthof. Those who have used both usually have a preference. My preference (and therefore bias you should know about) is for the Wusthofs.

The Wusthof Classic line is the more conservative counterpart to the Grand Prix line. The only difference, however, is the handle style. I personally prefer the Grand Prix, but this is an issue of personal preference. The balance and grip of these knives are as close to perfect as I have found. For those wondering what benefits a higher priced knife provides, one benefit is that the blade (or tang) is one piece all the way through the handle. This makes the blade much stronger, and less likely to snap.

This set includes an 8 inch chef's knife, a 3 inch paring knife, a 6 inch sandwich knife, 7 inch bread, a sharpening steel, and an oak block

The 8 inch chef's knife is a great knife. Wusthof offers four sizes of chef's knives in the... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars You will NOT get what's pictured in the product description!, February 19, 2010

Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
I have a Wusthof Classic that's been sharpened so many times (a decade of daily use), it's come time to replace it. Saw this deal, saw the Classic line in the pictures and ordered.
What was pictured is NOT what was received!
Don't be fooled. This is not the Classic set, it's the cheap stamped out set, and because of it, this isn't a deal. A stamped knife is a stamped knife. It's cheap, light, can't hold an edge and while not really bad, is not something you want to use every day for years and years.

It's a disgrace for Amazon to picture a different product in anothers product description, but it's my fault for trusting them with it and not simply reading reviews and making sure I'm getting what I think I'm getting.

Beware!! Image is deceitful: the design of the knives that is being featured online is much more simple and poorer quality (no curved handle or red label) than the photo that's being used to promote the product! I instantly returned it: actual product and product in the photo are not the same!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Pinzon Round Bamboo Chopping Block with Inset Mezzaluna, February 11, 2009
This review is from: Pinzon Round Bamboo Chopping Block with Inset Mezzaluna (Kitchen)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program ( What's this?)
First of all, it looks absolutely beautiful, the color of the block and the texture of bamboo is wonderful. It is quite heavy, so it is better left on the counter, but it is OK since it is so pretty.
Unfortunately, the one I have received had two defects. First, the block is made out of glued bamboo planks, and the glue did not take in two places, so there we have something that looks like cracks. Fortunately, they are both on the same side, so the other side still can be used and looks fine.
The second defect is that the mezzaluna itself is pretty useless since it is not sharp in any way, the cutting edge is about 1 mm thick, so it cannot really cut anything harder then boiled eggs. I would have sharpened it, but it does not fit in my knife sharpener, I might get a sharpening block to try to fix the blade, but I don't have it now, so I cannot tell if it will work.
Anyway, the block still sits on my counter, I use it with regular knives.
Also, since it is so... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice piece of wood, January 12, 2009

Gaz Rendar (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pinzon Round Bamboo Chopping Block with Inset Mezzaluna (Kitchen)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program ( What's this?)
This Pinzon round bamboo chopping block is nicely constructed, and seems very durable. The block has some heft to it, and the handles are useful for carrying it around or holding onto the side while your dicing and chopping quickly. The mezzaluna slides into the side of the block and gently "locks" itself into place. Very well built, you are getting your money's worth here.

I've used the Pinzon block to chop onions and and avocados on the flat side and it has great chopping action without slowing down or "catching" your blade, but you obviously can do that on any good cutting board. What's really useful, however, is the other side with the slightly concave surface. This works great for chopping and dicing things like garlic cloves with the included mezzaluna.

So why only 4 stars? Really, I'd give it 4.5, but I can't vote that way. The only thing I don't really care for is the the handle on the mezzaluna. It's not the most comfortable thing in the... Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars It doesn't make the cut: A Pinzon round bamboo chopping block with inset mezzaluna review, December 30, 2008
By
This review is from: Pinzon Round Bamboo Chopping Block with Inset Mezzaluna (Kitchen)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program ( What's this?)
I recently received the Pinzon round bamboo chopping block with inset mezzaluna. As a chef I enjoy many kitchen products and typically cook from scratch. Although I commonly use kitchen products made for home use, I tend to look at them from a professional point of view. As for cutting boards and chopping blocks, I like a variety for different uses. I've never used a mezzaluna set before as I generally use my chef's knife or products similar to this herb mincer to quickly chop herbs. Being intrigued by this set, I wanted the opportunity to put this chopping block to the test.

Being made from bamboo, the board is manufactured from a renewable resource for a greener product without sacrificing the quality of typical maple boards. Bamboo has a tendency to be more decorative as well and this chopping block, about the... Read more

Lansky Deluxe 5-Stone Sharpening System

Product Description

Deluxe version of our Std System adds an Extra Coarse and an Ultra Fine hone

Amazon.com

Sharpen all of your knives with ease with the Lansky Deluxe five-stone sharpening system. The system comes with five sharpening hones of different coarseness: an extra-coarse hone (70 grit), a coarse hone (120 grit), a medium hone (280 grit), a fine alumina oxide hone (600 grit), and an extra-fine ceramic hone (1,000 grit). As a result, you'll have the tools to sharpen virtually any type of kitchen, hobby, hunting, or garden knife. The system is easy to use, with a controlled-angle sharpening system built into the precision-engineered knife clamp. Simply secure the knife and choose your preferred angle and you'll receive a professional razor-sharp edge every time.

Each of the four angle options is suitable for a different knife type. The severe 17-degree angle is recommended for razor blades, X-Acto blades, scalpels, and similar tools, as it provides an extremely sharp but delicate edge. The 20-degree angle is commonly used for higher-quality blades, making it ideal for kitchen cutlery and filet knives. The 25-degree angle is recommended for knives that need a durable, sharp edge, such as hunting and outdoor knives. And the 30-degree angle is recommended for heavy-duty knives that commonly cut cardboard, wire, or carpets

Each honing stone is color-coded, with finger-grooved safety holders to keep your hand secure. The kit also comes with a guide rod for each honing stone, specially formulated honing oil, extra-long knife clamp screws, easy-to-follow multilingual instructions, and a custom molded storage/carrying case to hold all system components.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complete set - Lansky is the easiest way to use stones to sharpen your knives., May 26, 2008
This review is from: Lansky Deluxe 5-Stone Sharpening System (Sports)
I've owned the Lansky system for almost 20 years and have been very happy with it. It enables me to get fantastically sharp knives every time with a bit of elbow grease but without having much actual skill. Lansky's system is a brilliant arrangement of a knife clamp with sets of holes that ensure consistent grinding angle for the stones that have long steel guides. This solves the problem of how to hold the stone to the knife at a consistent angle. Using stones to sharpen your knives gives you total control and allows you to achieve the finest edge (much finer than using a chef's choice, motorized bench grinder (which can overheat the blade ruining the temper), or any of those ceramic wheel/rod dohickeys). The available angle choices are 17 degrees (for Asian knives), 20 and 25 (for Western knives) and 30 degrees (for hatchets). Lansky offers various different stones (from natural Arkansas stones, to diamond abrasive). This particular set includes their entire line of synthetic... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars great sharpening system!, November 19, 2007
This review is from: Lansky Deluxe 5-Stone Sharpening System (Sports)
First off, Im not a professional chef. I was lucky enough to work under a great chef when I was in college and learned to value a sharp edged knife. I have purchased a lot of knives over the years. I have good german knives (F Dick) and good japanese knives (Misono, Hattori and Shun) I have never been able to put a good edge on a knife consistently. Ive gotten to the point that I rotate and send out my knives to be professionally sharpened...and wrecked.

Ah...The Lansky System. it is a system...it works, its fairly easy and it consistently puts a great edge on my knives. I practiced on some NSF junk I keep to put out for the inlaws when they house sit and they edge it put on the pitted and chunked edge was great. if you buy it get the universal mount because it can be awkward w/o it.

I have had a Lansky for a couple years, this one was a gift. They are without a doubt the best sharpener I have used. They take all the guess work out of it. Highly recommended.
